Dental Sealants

Why are sealants needed?

Dental caries is multi-factorial and, overtime, can result in damage to the hard dental tissues.

Presence of deep grooves over the occlusal(chewing) surfaces of teeth coupled with inadequate oral hygiene, consumption of foods high in sugar content, acidic beverages, can result in dental caries(tooth decay). 

Prevention of dental caries arising from these areas in children and yound adults can be achieved with the help of dental sealants.

Sealants are systems (etch +bond + flowable sealant) that are applied to the occlusal (chewing) surfaces of teeth to form a physical barrier on the tooth surface against food/plaque penetrating into these areas, thereby preventing dental caries. This is a non-invasive procedure performed after a thorough oral prophylaxis( dental cleaning) is performed.

Sealants are a safe and effective way of preventing caries.
